# How AI informs New Zealand voters

Edition 1 · answers collected 5 October 2026.

[Read on NZBrands.ai](https://nzbrands.ai/research/nz-election-2026/editions/1/)

A study of what AI assistants tell New Zealanders about the 2026 general election. We put 174 questions, written as 32 New Zealand voters, to ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode and Google AI Overviews, and analysed the responses: which parties each one named, what it said about them, and which sources it relied on.

## Study figures

| Measure | Value | Meaning |
| --- | --- | --- |
| AI assistants | 4 | The four AI tools we asked: ChatGPT, Gemini, Google AI Mode, and the AI Overviews that appear at the top of Google search results. |
| questions | 174 | The questions we put to every assistant, each written the way a real voter would ask it. |
| voter profiles | 32 | Every question was asked as one of 32 New Zealanders, such as a first-time voter, a sole parent or a farming household, so the answers reflect different people’s lives. |
| topics | 20 | The subjects the questions cover, such as housing, healthcare, retirement and infrastructure. |
| locations | 9 | We also asked from nine locations around the country, from Northland to Queenstown Lakes, to see whether the answers change depending on where you are. |
| answers analysed | 815 | Every answer the four assistants gave. We read each one and recorded which parties it named, what it said about them and which sources it relied on. |
| last updated | 5 Oct | The day these answers were collected. We ask the same questions again every Monday and Thursday until the election. |
| next update | 12 Oct | When we next put the same questions to the assistants and publish what changed. |

## Key results at a glance

### Answers stopped short of recommending a party, even when the voter asked for one.

32 of 32

We asked for a recommendation on who to vote for 32 times. None of the answers recommended a specific party, and ChatGPT said in all of its answers that it would not choose. Instead, the answers gave several parties for the voter to look at. The typical answer named five parties, and no answer narrowed the choice to one or two.

### The assistant you ask changes which parties you hear about.

6 · 5 · 4 · 3

For the same renter on variable hours, Gemini covered six parties in some depth, ChatGPT five, AI Overviews four and AI Mode three.

### Answers named different parties when asked from a location.

72 of 124

We asked the same questions nationally and from nine locations around New Zealand, then compared the answers. A housing question asked from Queenstown came back with five named parties, while the national answer talked about housing policy in general.

[Compare the nine locations](https://nzbrands.ai/research/nz-election-2026/editions/1/#situations)

### A few publishers shape the policy picture.

42 of 99

Policy.nz is linked to 42 of 99 housing answers, and Kiwi Coaches to 27 of 96 on infrastructure. Each publisher makes its own choices about which parties to cover.

[See the housing sources](https://nzbrands.ai/research/nz-election-2026/editions/1/#sources)

### Gemini answers gave a link to check the source.

5 of 200

ChatGPT linked to its sources in 198 of 200 answers. AI Mode did in 55, AI Overviews in 40 and Gemini in five. Without a link, a voter can’t check an answer against its source, and six of the 17 statements we checked were wrong or out of date.

source: Here, a source is a link printed in the answer itself, which you can follow to check what the answer says. Gemini relied on websites in most of its answers, but showed a link in only five.

### Statements we checked against official sources were wrong or out of date.

6 of 17

We checked 17 statements from the answers against official sources. Six were wrong or out of date, including the deadline for overseas voters to return a paper vote, the current FamilyBoost childcare rebate, and whether a new hospital had opened.

## Most answers leave out at least one party in Parliament.

There are six parties in Parliament. Of the 739 answers that mentioned any of them, 497 left at least one out. Te Pāti Māori was missing most often, from 422 answers, followed by NZ First, from 217.

### How many answers named each party

| Party | Answers naming party (of 815) |
| --- | --- |
| National | 727 |
| Labour | 714 |
| Greens | 692 |
| ACT | 617 |
| NZ First | 522 |
| Te Pāti Māori | 317 |
| Opportunity | 158 |

Each party is counted once in every answer that names it. Opportunity is not in Parliament.

### How often each AI assistant named every party in Parliament

| Assistant | Answers naming all six parliamentary parties | Answers collected |
| --- | --- | --- |
| ChatGPT | 78 | 205 |
| Gemini | 77 | 205 |
| Google AI Mode | 51 | 205 |
| Google AI Overviews | 36 | 200 |

Each square is one answer. Raised squares named all six parties in Parliament; flat squares left at least one out.

## See what AI says about each party on the issues we asked about

The tables show all four assistants together. Answer counts and claim counts are distinct measures; each claim counts only for the party it is about.

## None of the 32 answers told the voter who to vote for

Eight of the questions asked for a recommendation, a shortlist or a verdict on the best plan, and each went to all four assistants. No answer picked one party for the voter. Many still steered, by matching parties to the voter’s priorities or naming the parties to look at first.

| Behaviour | ChatGPT | Gemini | Google AI Mode | Google AI Overviews |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Told the voter who to vote for | 0 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Said it would not choose | 8 | 1 | 3 | 2 |
| Matched parties to the voter’s priorities | 1 | 5 | 4 | 1 |
| Named parties to look at first | 1 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Asked what matters to the voter | 5 | 6 | 1 | 5 |

Each square is one of the eight questions, in this order in every cell: Variable-hours renter · Sole parent · Recently redundant · Café owner · Renting retiree · Farming household · Māori whānau · Undecided voter. One answer can do several of these things at once. Every answer was read in full and coded by hand.

## See where each assistant gets its information

A website counts once per answer, however many times the answer used it. Counts come from the sources recorded with each answer: 774 of the 815 answers have at least one. We assigned a publisher type by hand to every website in a top-ten list; any other website counts as Other.

Sources recorded against answers are separate from links shown in their text. These whole-study counts include all captured answers; matched comparisons use the panels described beside each measure.

## Nine editions to election day

The same 174 questions, put to the four AI assistants every Monday and Thursday until the vote. Each edition records what changed since the last.

Each edition is dated by the day its answers were collected.

This document contains only the edition identified above; scheduled editions are not collected results.

## What this can and cannot tell you

One set of answers, from made-up voters, on one day.

Each question was asked once. AI assistants vary their answers, so a repeat run would differ in wording and detail. The location comparison shows that answers differed; proving that location caused the difference would need repeat runs and verified access locations.

The voters are designed situations, not a sample of New Zealanders. The study shows what the assistants said and lets anyone check it. It does not show whether anyone changed their vote, or why the assistants answered as they did.

We read all 32 voting-guidance answers and the case-study questions in full, and checked 17 statements. We have not read all 815 answers in full or checked every policy claim.
