## How the assistants handled this voter’s main question

The retired renter's lead question changes the housing frame from asset ownership to staying put. PF067 ChatGPT begins with secure housing on NZ Super and compares rent increases, tenure, public housing and help with costs. That is a materially different task from S12's pension-eligibility comparison, even though both people are retired.

The Google and Gemini responses also emphasise tenancy and supply. Gemini closes by asking the user to choose rent controls or supply incentives; AI Mode adds accommodation-assistance thresholds. The latter is potentially useful because savings and rent may affect assistance, but eligibility should be checked against current administrative rules rather than inferred from an older-person label.

A renter protection is not necessarily a home becoming available, and a promise to build homes is not immediate security for this tenant. The useful analysis keeps tenure, affordability, eligibility and delivery time distinct. Comparing S12 and S13 illustrates why the study uses circumstances rather than assuming one set of concerns for all retirees.

ChatGPT

> If your main concern is staying securely housed on NZ Super without being forced to move because of rent increases, the parties differ quite sharply. The 2026 election is on 7 November 2026. New Zealand Parliament dissolved ahead of tight November vote

> As a retired New Zealander relying on NZ Super and renting, your concerns reflect a growing reality: according to the Retirement Commission, roughly 20% of people aged over 65 now rent, and advocacy groups like Grey Power have flagged housing security and the adequacy of financial supports (like the Accommodation Supplement, whose cash-asset limits haven't changed since 1993) as top election priorities.

## What this can and cannot tell you

One set of answers, from made-up voters, on one day.

Each question was asked once. AI assistants vary their answers, so a repeat run would differ in wording and detail. The location comparison shows that answers differed; proving that location caused the difference would need repeat runs and verified access locations.

The voters are designed situations, not a sample of New Zealanders. The study shows what the assistants said and lets anyone check it. It does not show whether anyone changed their vote, or why the assistants answered as they did.

We read all 32 voting-guidance answers and the case-study questions in full, and checked 17 statements. We have not read all 815 answers in full or checked every policy claim.
