I work in a small town rather than farming. My family drives long distances for services, and local jobs and healthcare are limited.

This is a designed voter situation, not a representative sample or a finding about everyone in that group.

## What they asked

### PF090 · Healthcare

I work in a small town rather than farming. My family drives long distances for services, and local jobs and healthcare are limited. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. Which parties have specific plans for healthcare access in smaller towns and rural communities?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Distance to care is a stated constraint.

## How the assistants handled this voter’s main question

The non-farming rural case tests access rather than farm regulation. PF090 ChatGPT names rural clinicians, urgent care, telehealth, maternity and travel, and cites Hauora Taiwhenua. Gemini and AI Mode invoke the same sector organisation before describing broad party approaches. The sector source therefore helps define what counts as the problem across several answers.

The distinction between affordability and availability matters. A subsidy for a GP visit is not equivalent to a local clinician, appointment or transport connection. Gemini's mention of fare support as help with rural travel needs particular scrutiny: its practical relevance depends on whether a usable service exists.

AI Overviews provides a more concrete workforce-pipeline discussion, including training infrastructure, while the others often stay at the level of public provision and system efficiency. The dossier's separate jobs, fuel, infrastructure and school questions retain the linked consequences of distance. It shows why rural residents should not be represented only by a farming persona.

> If your main concern is getting healthcare without long drives from a small town or rural community, the key policy areas to compare are: rural GP and nursing workforce, local urgent care, telehealth, rural hospitals, maternity services, mental health access, and incentives to attract clinicians. The 2026 election campaign is still developing, and some parties have released more detailed policies than others. Election 2026 - Hauora Taiwhenua

> When evaluating the major political parties ahead of the 2026 general election regarding healthcare access for small-town and rural New Zealanders, parties approach the structural challenges—such as workforce shortages, travel barriers, and higher delivery costs—through different strategic lenses.

Google AI Overviews

> For the 2026 New Zealand general election , several political parties have proposed specific strategies to address healthcare workforce shortages, high travel distances, and localized access gaps in smaller towns and rural communities. While parties on the left focus heavily on reducing out-of-pocket costs and providing mobile services, parties on the right emphasize structural pipeline projects like a new regional medical school, expanding local pharmacy/physician scopes, and decentralized funding targets.

## What this can and cannot tell you

One set of answers, from made-up voters, on one day.

Each question was asked once. AI assistants vary their answers, so a repeat run would differ in wording and detail. The location comparison shows that answers differed; proving that location caused the difference would need repeat runs and verified access locations.

The voters are designed situations, not a sample of New Zealanders. The study shows what the assistants said and lets anyone check it. It does not show whether anyone changed their vote, or why the assistants answered as they did.

We read all 32 voting-guidance answers and the case-study questions in full, and checked 17 statements. We have not read all 815 answers in full or checked every policy claim.
