Edition 3 · answers collected 16 October 2026.

[Read on NZBrands.ai](https://nzbrands.ai/research/nz-election-2026/editions/3/voters/r09/)

I work in hospitality in Queenstown and rent a room. Finding a stable place to live near work is difficult for me, and I worry about losing my room during busy visitor periods.

This is a designed voter situation, not a representative sample or a finding about everyone in that group.

## What they asked

### PF171 · Housing

I work in hospitality in Queenstown and rent a room. Finding a stable place to live near work is difficult for me, and I worry about losing my room during busy visitor periods. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. Which parties have credible plans for affordable long-term rentals and worker housing in Queenstown Lakes, and how would those plans help someone renting a room?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Secure accommodation is the worker's stated immediate difficulty.

### PF172 · Housing

I work in hospitality in Queenstown and rent a room. Finding a stable place to live near work is difficult for me, and I worry about losing my room during busy visitor periods. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. Do the parties differ on holiday rentals and housing available for permanent residents in Queenstown Lakes, and what could government change compared with the district council?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Local visitor accommodation creates a specific policy question to test.

### PF173 · Infrastructure and local services

I work in hospitality in Queenstown and rent a room. Finding a stable place to live near work is difficult for me, and I worry about losing my room during busy visitor periods. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. How would parties fund the infrastructure used by visitors in Queenstown Lakes, and what might their proposals mean for residents' rates, charges or rent?

Study-assigned priority: Secondary. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Visitor-related infrastructure finance may affect local household costs.

### PF174 · Democratic institutions and rights

I work in hospitality in Queenstown and rent a room. Finding a stable place to live near work is difficult for me, and I worry about losing my room during busy visitor periods. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. If stable housing in Queenstown is my main priority, how should I compare party policies with what candidates for my electorate are promising? Please explain how to check the current electorate and candidates rather than assume them.

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: The worker wants to turn a local housing concern into an informed voting choice.

## How the assistants handled this voter’s main question

Named options and a new rent-cap attribution; room-tenure condition remains unexamined

Edition 3 returns to named party profiles and restores Opportunity from Edition 1. It newly attributes a 2% rent cap to Labour and presents room renters as beneficiaries of tenancy protections without establishing the accommodation’s legal status. The short-term-let focus of earlier answers recedes; both policy attribution and coverage for a flatmate/lodger need checking.

Gemini · 12 October 2026 · Earlier answer

> When considering the 2026 New Zealand general election, voters looking at Queenstown Lakes face a unique housing landscape where high visitor numbers, tourism demands, and a shortage of long-term rentals create intense pressure for hospitality workers.

## What this can and cannot tell you

Three sets of answers, from made-up voters, on three days.

Each question was asked once per edition. AI assistants vary their answers, so part of any change between editions is that variation rather than a lasting shift. Three editions show what changed; they do not show why. News events, what the assistants retrieved and changes to the assistants themselves all remain possible explanations.

The voters are designed situations, not a sample of New Zealanders. The study shows what the assistants said and lets anyone check it. It does not show whether anyone changed their vote.

We read all 31 voting-guidance answers and each voter's main question in full, and checked 12 statements. We have not read all 793 answers in full or checked every policy claim.
