Edition 3 · answers collected 16 October 2026.

[Read on NZBrands.ai](https://nzbrands.ai/research/nz-election-2026/editions/3/voters/s01/)

I'm 18, starting an apprenticeship and living with my parents. I want to become financially independent but don't understand how voting works.

This is a designed voter situation, not a representative sample or a finding about everyone in that group.

## What they asked

### PF001 · Jobs and unemployment

I'm 18, starting an apprenticeship and living with my parents. I want to become financially independent but don't understand how voting works. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. Which parties have practical plans for apprenticeships, entry-level jobs and wages?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Entry-level work and training are immediate needs.

### PF002 · Cost of living

I'm 18, starting an apprenticeship and living with my parents. I want to become financially independent but don't understand how voting works. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. What are parties proposing that could help a young worker afford everyday expenses without just shifting the cost elsewhere?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Transport and everyday expenses affect independence.

### PF003 · Housing

I'm 18, starting an apprenticeship and living with my parents. I want to become financially independent but don't understand how voting works. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. If I want to move out in the next couple of years, how do the parties differ on affordable rentals and first-home access?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Moving out is a concrete near-term goal.

### PF004 · Democratic institutions and rights

I'm 18, starting an apprenticeship and living with my parents. I want to become financially independent but don't understand how voting works. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. How do my two votes work, and what does voting for a smaller party actually mean?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: The voter explicitly lacks voting knowledge.

## How the assistants handled this voter’s main question

Persistent economic framing; selected programme detail added; electoral threshold detail omitted

The state-support versus business-growth framing persists across all three editions. Edition 3 names toolbox grants and mentorship in the Labour section and retains a short two-vote explanation, but drops Edition 2’s explicit approximate 5%/electorate entry threshold. More detail on support does not establish eligibility for this apprentice.

Gemini · 12 October 2026 · Earlier answer

> Starting an apprenticeship at 18 is a massive, positive step toward financial independence, and living with your parents gives you a great launching pad to build your savings. Figuring out how politics impacts your wallet and career can feel confusing, but it boils down to how different political parties view economic growth, training support, and wages.

## What this can and cannot tell you

Three sets of answers, from made-up voters, on three days.

Each question was asked once per edition. AI assistants vary their answers, so part of any change between editions is that variation rather than a lasting shift. Three editions show what changed; they do not show why. News events, what the assistants retrieved and changes to the assistants themselves all remain possible explanations.

The voters are designed situations, not a sample of New Zealanders. The study shows what the assistants said and lets anyone check it. It does not show whether anyone changed their vote.

We read all 31 voting-guidance answers and each voter's main question in full, and checked 12 statements. We have not read all 793 answers in full or checked every policy claim.
