Edition 3 · answers collected 16 October 2026.

[Read on NZBrands.ai](https://nzbrands.ai/research/nz-election-2026/editions/3/voters/s08/)

I've recently been made redundant after years in the same industry. I have rent to pay, and I'm unsure whether to retrain or keep looking for similar work.

This is a designed voter situation, not a representative sample or a finding about everyone in that group.

## What they asked

### PF039 · Jobs and unemployment

I've recently been made redundant after years in the same industry. I have rent to pay, and I'm unsure whether to retrain or keep looking for similar work. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. What are parties offering people who lose their job: employment support, retraining, or measures to create new jobs?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: The immediate need is a viable path back to work.

I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. How do parties differ on support for someone between jobs, including eligibility rules and obligations?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Income continuity affects rent and basic needs.

I've recently been made redundant after years in the same industry. I have rent to pay, and I'm unsure whether to retrain or keep looking for similar work. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. Which party policies would help an adult retrain without taking on unaffordable costs?

Study-assigned priority: Major. This is a design assumption, not a measured preference. Reason: Retraining cost and time affect the stated choice.

I've recently been made redundant after years in the same industry. I have rent to pay, and I'm unsure whether to retrain or keep looking for similar work. I am considering my vote in the 2026 New Zealand general election. What do parties propose for people who cannot cover rent after losing their job?

## How the assistants handled this voter’s main question

Stable economic frame; NZ First grouping changes

The market-led recovery versus state-supported transition contrast persists throughout. Edition 3 groups NZ First into the incumbent centre-right bloc, whereas Edition 2 also places it among parties enhancing income support. The new answer remains philosophical and provides no eligibility, amount or start date for a concrete retraining entitlement.

Gemini · 12 October 2026 · Earlier answer

> Navigating redundancy is a stressful experience, particularly when you have immediate financial pressures like rent. Ahead of the 2026 general election, New Zealand political parties are offering distinct approaches to job support, retraining, and economic growth.

## What this can and cannot tell you

Three sets of answers, from made-up voters, on three days.

Each question was asked once per edition. AI assistants vary their answers, so part of any change between editions is that variation rather than a lasting shift. Three editions show what changed; they do not show why. News events, what the assistants retrieved and changes to the assistants themselves all remain possible explanations.

The voters are designed situations, not a sample of New Zealanders. The study shows what the assistants said and lets anyone check it. It does not show whether anyone changed their vote.

We read all 31 voting-guidance answers and each voter's main question in full, and checked 12 statements. We have not read all 793 answers in full or checked every policy claim.
