We asked four AI platforms about choosing car insurance and getting help with an existing policy or claim. The study compares their answers and insurer recommendations across twelve consumer situations and sixteen New Zealand regions.
The car, the driver and the help they need change the shortlist.

03 · Ongoing support
After purchase, AI helps people work through the policy and the claim.
The thirty-two support answers cover renewal, switching, a parked-car excess, damage around a move, a disputed repair or write-off, and transport to a distant repairer.
The answers help people identify the relevant policy terms, gather evidence, ask their insurer for an explanation and follow the complaints process. The insurer names in these answers are policy examples or options for a future renewal; they are not recommendations for another insurer to handle an existing claim.
04 · Platforms
The same questions produce different insurer emphasis.
We compared twelve identical consumer-selection questions across all four platforms. AMI appears in every ChatGPT and Gemini answer; AI Overviews includes it in nine, and AI Mode in ten.

“AA Insurance … • Windscreen and key cover typically require optional add-ons (though key replacement has specific excess-free conditions if stolen).”
Comprehensive includes key/lock cover; excess-free glass is an optional benefit.
“2. The Risk of Uninsured Drivers Because insurance is voluntary, a notable percentage of motorists on New Zealand roads drive completely uninsured. If an uninsured driver hits you and it is their fault, getting them to pay for your car repairs out-of-pocket can turn into a legal and financial nightmare. Many comprehensive policies in New Zealand include a small clause (often up to $4,000) that protects you if you're hit by an uninsured driver, provided you can identify them. Without any insurance of your own, you absorb 100% of the loss.”
Limited uninsured-driver own-car benefit is a Third Party/TPFT feature; comprehensive covers eligible full accidental damage.
“Uninsured Drivers: While you might be responsible, many drivers on Kiwi roads carry no insurance at all. If an uninsured driver hits you, a Third Party Only policy generally will not cover your repairs unless you can identify the driver, their registration, and prove they were entirely at fault (and even then, payouts are legally capped at low limits, usually around $3,000–$4,000).”
Limited uninsured-driver own-car benefit is a Third Party/TPFT feature; comprehensive covers eligible full accidental damage.
“Value Basis; Often defaults to Market Value or depreciating standard values.; Always Agreed Value backed by expert valuation. … Payout Certainty; Low. Subject to standard depreciation at claim time.; High. You get the exact stated dollar figure. … True Agreed Value Settlement: You lock in a fixed sum with your insurer upfront. If the vehicle is written off or stolen, you receive that exact amount minus your excess—no arguments over market trends at the time of the accident.”
Specialist policies can use market value; agreed-value settlements also have deductions and valuation requirements.
“If you have Third Party, Fire and Theft Insurance: Your policy generally only covers damage you cause to others. However, if you can prove the other driver was at fault and uninsured/insured, you may need to pursue the at-fault party directly (sometimes via a Letter of Demand or the Disputes Tribunal for claims up to $30,000), though some third-party policies include limited uninsured motorist benefit protection. Check your specific policy wording.”
Disputes Tribunal jurisdiction increased to $60,000 on 24 January 2026.
“Disputes Tribunal: For vehicle claims up to $30,000, you can file a case in the Disputes Tribunal. This is an informal, low-cost legal alternative to court where lawyers are not permitted to represent either side.”
Disputes Tribunal jurisdiction increased to $60,000 on 24 January 2026.
